The town and its surrounding area are renowned for its natural beauty, and it has a fascinating history stretching back to the 8th century. Lyme Regis is also famous as the birthplace of Mary Anning, one of history’s most important fossil collectors and palaeontologists.

Life’s a beach!
One of the main attractions of this pretty little seaside town has to be the beaches! A beautiful sandy stretch provides the perfect setting for some serious sandcastle building or head over to the pebblier beach for a bit of stone skimming!
Lyme’s beaches also offer tantalising evidence of the area’s Jurassic past.
Back Beach and Monmouth Beach are where you can hunt and hopefully find fossils – a keen eye is required. What could be better than time spent hunting fossils chasing waves. While hunting fossils on Back Beach you must be aware that the tides comes in and out very quickly.

Whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll or a longer, more energetic, walk, Lyme Regis offers a number of wonderful coastal and inland routes to explore.
Take a family stroll along the Marine Parade and out along the historic Cobb. Make sure you stop at the end and gaze back towards the town; Lyme Regis looks impossibly pretty from this vantage point! Or why not meander round the town or enjoy a riverside walk all the way to Uplyme across the border in Devon.
Pack up a picnic and walk a stretch of the coast path, there might be some steep climbs along the way but you’ll be rewarded with some awe-inspiring views.

Lyme Regis is perfectly located to explore neighbouring Dorset towns like Charmouth, West Bay (Home of Broadchurch) and attractions, or even go over the border into nearby Devon to towns like Seaton, Beer and Sidmouth.

Magnificent Museum!
Any trip to Lyme Regis would not be complete without a trip to The Lyme Regis Philpot Museum. This museum truly caters for everyone with exhibitions on Jane Austen, The Cobb and its jam packed full of all things fossil! This Museum will satisfy anyone’s lust for dinosaurs, you’ll even find a table made from dinosaur poo!! The Museum is built on the site of famous fossil collector Mary Anning’s home and fossil shop. It has a new a wing dedicated to Mary with an interactive geology gallery telling her story. You can even follow in her footsteps and go fossil hunting on the beach! Fossil guided walks are available from the museum to entertain all ages with fun and informative guides.
